Appledore is situated in a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or AONB, and deservedly so! The coast path is easily accessible from Pawprints and will lead you to Coombe Martin in one direction and all the way to Cornwall in the other. Whether you explore on foot or by car one thing is for sure, you'll be hard pushed to find more beautiful scenery in the whole of the world. Dramatic cliffs, miles of golden sand, breathtaking views, it's all right on the doorstep.
Places to visit of special note include Clovelly with its steep cobbles from the top of the hill to the small harbour below. Clovelly is world famous and to this day is owned by just one family! A visitor centre at the top of the hill offers information on the village, a shop and tea room. One could easily spend the day at Clovelly and it's within a 30 minute drive of Pawprints.
Westward Ho!, with it's miles of golden sands, is just a five minute drive. Did you know that Westward Ho! is named after a book by Charles Kingsley who went to school there? It's the only place in England with an exclamation mark after it's name. The beach is acessible from several points and has a year round dog friendly section. There are gift shops, cafes, a butcher and two excellent bakeries.
Northam is also just a few minutes drive away and has a doctors surgery, dentist, vet, chemist and post office.
Bideford with its historic quay and bustling shops and indoor market is well worth a visit. Boat trips to Lundy Island can be taken from here in the summer months.
Just across the river from Appledore itself is Instow, a pretty village with a wonderful beach, craft shops and galleries and a variety of pubs and restaurants.
Barnstaple is about a twenty minute drive and offers most of the chain stores available in town centres with the addition of a pannier market and individual shops and galleries. There is also a cinema and theatre.
Further along the coast from Barnstaple is Braunton Burrows which is a fantastic location for a picnic, game of beach football and miles of dog walks! There is a small entrance charge. Further along the coast is Saunton Sands and Woolacombe, both renowned for their miles of sandy beaches. Ilfracombe is a few miles further on and is well worth a visit. Artist Damien Hirst has a restaurant there as well as a very controversial sculpture!
If you fancy some retail therapy Atlantic Village is an outlet shopping centre and only five minutes drive away. Next door is a decent sized Asda.
Children are well catered for in this area with most attractions being mainly indoors making them all weather venues. Just five minutes walk away is Skern Lodge activity centre which offers outdoor activities for the whole family. There's a public swimming pool in Northam, just along the road from Pawprints. The Big Sheep is a fantastic day out with loads of activities for children of all ages. The Milky Way is an alien inspired theme park with everything from a rollercoaster to dodgems. A childrens farm is also on site with bottle feeding of lambs possible on most days. Sheep racing is another activity well worth seeing!
